Stephen Engel Death, Obituary – On May 30, 2023, Stephen Engel, who was 76 years old and from Hanahan, South Carolina, passed away. His parents, Stephen Engel, Sr. and Lillian Costa Engel, welcomed him into the world on April 27, 1947 in the Bronx, New York. Steve attended General Douglas MacArthur High School in Wantagh, New York, after completing his high school education in Seaford, which is located on Long Island, New York. He attended Siena College in Loudonville, New York, where he was named to the Dean’s List and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
During his time at Siena, he was a starter in football and lacrosse for all three of those years. In the sport of football, he finished his career with the most pass catches ever. As a senior in lacrosse, he was a member of the first team all-conference, was selected for the Outstanding College Athlete of America, and was a co-most valuable player for the team. During the graduation ceremony, he was given a commission as an officer in the Army.
After completing his military service in both Germany and Vietnam, he was eventually promoted to the position of artillery battery commander with the 101st Airborne Division. After getting back to his hometown, he tied the knot with his high school sweetheart, Kathy Reilly. He was employed by the Procter & Gamble Company in New York City’s sales department. After relocating to Flanders, New Jersey and completing his Master of Business.
Administration in Marketing degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he worked in marketing for companies such as Beecham Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Plumrose, and Marcal Paper, where he was ultimately in charge of all of the company’s marketing efforts. After that, he established a business that specialized in marketing and sales promotion, which he eventually ran for a period of twenty years.
Steve was very active in the youth sports community, instructing football, lacrosse, and basketball to younger athletes. His primary focus was on track and field competitions for younger athletes. He was in charge of and served as head coach for the junior track and field program in Mount Olive, New Jersey for a number of years. Additionally, he founded the junior cross country program in Mount Olive and assisted in the establishment of the junior cross country program in Morris County, New Jersey.
After retiring in 2006, he and Kathy relocated to Hanahan together. Kathy, his wife of 51 years, his daughter Christine Engel (JJ Bristow), and his son William “Bill” Engel are among those who are left behind after his passing.
At the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in West Ashley on Saturday, June 3, 2023, one hour prior to the ceremony, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, the family will be present to greet friends. This will take place between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. The funeral service will begin at eleven in the morning and take place at the funeral home. Following the service, the deceased will be laid to rest in Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina.
