Mrs. Barbara Bernice Death, Obituary – Mrs. Barbara Bernice Hiatt Nester, age 94, of Mount Airy, passed away at her home on Friday, June 9, 2023. She was a resident of Mount Airy. She was born on July 21, 1928 in Carroll County, Virginia, to the late Thomas Raleigh and Exie Inscore Hiatt. Both of her parents have since passed away. Above all things, Barbara prioritized the welfare of her family. When her entire family got together on Christmas Eve morning to have a big country breakfast with warm biscuits that she had been preparing since 4:30 that morning, they created many memories that will be passed down through the generations.
She had a quiet and gentle disposition, in addition to her generous nature. She showered her family with unending love, care, and support throughout her life. She was the type of person who would never complain and had a disposition that was gracious and forgiving. Her courageous spirit, generous heart, and altruistic character will be sorely missed by her family as well as her community. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will unquestionably be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to call her family member.
Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Dallas Nester (Lynne), Jo Ann Mears (Jerry) Janet Nester, Marty Nester (Jenua), Jacqueline Nester; grandchildren, Keith, Kerry, Kelly, Jason, and Jarrett Nester, Jamie Putnam, Jodi Tolbert, Jana Saur, Dusty, Dane, and Jesse Nester, Lindsey Joyce; twenty-two great-grandchildren; sisters, Ivalene Chaffin, Faye Randall, Gloria Payne; brothers, Otto Hiatt.
Mrs. Nester was preceded in death by her husband, Hoover Martin Nester; daughter, Joy Kay Nester; sisters Audrey Wright, Wanda Hiatt, Geraldine Deal, and Dare Hiatt; brothers Quenten, Bernard, and Reid Hiatt. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nester was also predeceased by her husband, Hoover Martin Nester. in 11:00 in the morning on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in the Unity Church Cemetery, Reverend Buford Jessup will preside over a graveside service that will be held in memory of the deceased.
On Wednesday, the family will meet with friends beginning at ten in the morning and continuing up to the time of the funeral service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent in Mrs. Nester’s honor to the Unity Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, which is located at 2874 Unity Church Road in Ararat, Virginia 24053.
