On February 1, 2023, Gary Crawford passed away after a long and happy life as a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. He was 67. Gar had a heart that was too big for words when it came to his love for his family. He was easy to get along with, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, and never failed to forget a person he’d met in the past. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a smile that made people want to be around him, and he was extremely generous and steadfast in his dedication to the people in his immediate environment.
Gar was born on June 1st, 1955 at the Chelsea Naval Hospital in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He spent his childhood in Billings, where he received his high school diploma from Billings West in 1973. One of his favorite places to be was with his grandparents, Batt and Louise Bertolino, on their ranch in Roberts. There, he would spend countless days chasing whitetail deer, wading in the creek, and helping out in the hay fields. This was one of his favorite places to be. After graduating from Dawson County Community College in Glendive with an associate’s degree in civil engineering technologies and continuing his education at Montana State University in Bozeman, he worked at the
Billings ExxonMobil Refinery for more than 35 years, during which time he was a member of the emergency fire response crew for 22 years and served as Captain of the Fire Brigade. He also earned a degree in civil engineering technologies from Dawson County Community College. Gar enjoyed taking both of his children and a large number of his friends out on his Harley and letting them experience the freedom of the open road. Camping and spending time on his boat, 1 Tuff Banan, which famously pulled him and his two brothers together while they were waterskiing, were two of his favorite things to do. He was also an accomplished hunter and fisherman.
He made log furniture by hand to give away to others, and he made sure that his loved ones were aware that they had an open invitation to visit him at his place in Red Lodge at any time. Ga, also known as Uncle Mo, Garry, and Dad, possessed the ability to make us laugh, and after we did, he would look back at us with a kind of amazed expression, as if he had only just then realized how funny he really was. Garry is survived by his mother, Barbara Bertolino Crawford; his children, Witney (Chad) Hoffman and Nic (Lauren) Crawford; his grandson, Hudson; his siblings, Craig (Susan) Crawford, Brian (Kass) Crawford, and Kristi (Lee) Robinson; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. His father, Chris Crawford, passed away before him and is buried next to him.
