Calli Newberry Death, Obituary, Accident – Calli Newberry had a clear idea of what she wanted to do with her life when she was 16 years old: she wanted to be a sports journalist. But what she couldn’t have known at the time were the tales she’d tell, the places she’d go, or the many people whose lives she’d touch. Both of those things would come to be true. An enthusiastic local sports reporter who was born and raised in Croswell, Newberry passed away on Tuesday as a consequence of injuries sustained in a car accident on Monday. Her age was 24.
“She was full of life, full of passion, and full of positivity,” said Lance Campbell, the coach of the Cros-Lex boys basketball team. “There aren’t too many people in the world that are still like that now. I am 46 years old, and she was just half my age, but I looked up to her because she was always happy. This inspired me to live my life to the fullest. She was one of a kind in every way.
“Calli was just genuine,” said Erik Johnson, the coach of both the Almont girls basketball and softball teams. “She was tuned in to each and every sport that she covered, as well as the children that she covered. It was clear that she had a strong interest in the topic, and her enthusiasm was shown both in her demeanour and in the way that she wrote.
The sports editor for the Sanilac County News, Mike Gallagher, described her as “the nicest person you could ever meet.” “She was the nicest person you could ever meet,” he said. It was wonderful to be able to talk to her every time we were covering the same game since it gave us the chance to catch up. There were times when sports weren’t even a topic of discussion in our interactions. She inquired about how you were doing in many aspects of your life. Calli was the epitome of a gentle spirit.
Jodi and Steve Townsend welcomed their son Newberry into the world on October 31st, 1998 in Croswell. She is the oldest of three children and graduated from Croswell-Lexington High School in 2017 where she participated in girls basketball, cross country, and track & field. Jake Townsend, who is Newberry’s younger brother, remarked that it is difficult to adequately express how much his sister meant to him. Not only was she my sister, but she was also a close friend of mine.
She was always there for me and I could chat to her about anything; she was also very supportive of me. She was the most important thing in my life. Newberry introduced her very own website, titled The Sports Report, on August 1st, 2022. Its goal was “to provide personal, in-depth, and timely coverage of local sports in the Blue Water Area through daily score updates, written stories, and weekly podcast episodes.” This coverage would be delivered in a variety of formats, including audio and video.
